A breakthrough in solid metal casting

Solid mold casting remains the best process  for a wide range of parts in aluminum, brass, bronze, and alloys that cast under  2000 F (1094 C). With Investal, you will realize dramatically improved  performance on parts you currently solid mold. Investal's remarkable properties  will even allow you to expand the range of parts where the solid-mold process is  beneficial.

Conventional slurries require time for the  slurry to thicken and harden. While this process occurs, the slurry settles and  a water layer develops under the patterns. The resulting voids cause metal  buildup, pattern distortion, and poor finish. Conventional slurries also utilize  significant quantities of cristobalite to counteract dehydration and shrinkage.  However, cristobalite introduces nonlinear phases of expansion and contraction  of the mold during heating and cooling. These abrupt changes can lead to  cracking, metal flash, and even mold failure.

Investal's patented formula, the result of  years of applied research and testing, overcomes these problems. Two unique  properties account for Investal's remarkable performance.

 

First...

Investal is thixotropic. Investall slurry  remains fluid as long as it is agitated. However, once poured, Investal's  thixotropic properties result in almost instant mold "solidification."  Thixotropy also allows much wider latitude in slurry fluidity, enabling Investal  to hold fine pattern detail with accuracy.

Second...

By eliminating added cristobalite from the  formulation, Investal offers virtually linear expansion and contraction curves  during heating and cooling. Mold stress factors during firing and cooling are  reduced. The result is improved mold integrity, better casting yield, reduced  mold firing cycles, and less metal flash.
